Edgar Cantero

Edgar Cantero (Barcelona, 1981) is a guy who watches tons of movies, lives on noodles, deifies women, draws comics, and writes fiction. Edgar’s native languages are Spanish and Catalan; he began writing in the latter. His first book, “Dormir amb Winona Ryder” (Sleeping with Winona Ryder), was awarded the Joan Crexells prize for best novel of 2007. His work, ranging from short stories to screenplays, often features butt-kicking female characters, colorful violence, sunsets, thunderstorms, and ill-timed jokes.

In the early 1970s, cartoon quintet Daphne, Velma, Fred, Shaggy and Great Dane Scooby-Doo drove around in a painted van, solving supernatural mysteries — which always turned out to be staged by all-too-human villains. Edgar Cantero latched onto these cultural icons and flipped the script, asking the story what would happen if one of those ghostly, creepy, eerie creatures had not been human, after all.

This Body’s Not Big Enough for the Both of Us (2019), by Edgar Cantero, is a metafictional roller coaster ride in which the safety bar that holds you into your seat occasionally turns into licorice whips else or disappears completely.

One definition of metafiction is a form of fiction that comments on fictional and literary elements by self-consciously departing from literary conventions within the narrative. If you like metafiction, you will get a kick out of Cantero’s story, and you will probably especially enjoy the opening, which restarts four times, I think, utilizes screenplay format, and has sentences like this one:
