Thrall

Thrall — (2006-2008) Publisher: Kate Reilly has a hard time trusting people. Six years ago, the love of her life turned her over to the vampire parasites who call themselves the Thrall. Katie survives the powerful bite of the master parasite only to discover that the Thrall’s venom, coupled with her own natural psychic ability, has transformed her. Now she is next in line to be the Thrall Queen — and each day might be her last as a human. Tom, a handsome firefighter, arouses all of Katie’s dormant senses, but her heart shies away. After Dylan’s betrayal, how can she trust any man — even a seemingly perfect and terribly sexy werewolf? Tom’s sincerity — and sex appeal — begins to wear down Katie’s defenses. But his increasingly insistent charm hides a potentially deadly secret: his werewolf pack is hiding the one person who can stop the Thrall from completing Katie’s transformation into Queen — and they won’t give her up.

Touch of Evil: Interesting but uneven

Readers’ average rating:

Touch of Evil by C.T. Adams and Cathy Clamp

Touch of Evil is a mixed bag. There were aspects of it that I liked a great deal, and aspects that didn’t work for me.

First, the good: C.T. Adams and Cathy Clamp’s vampires and werewolves are different from the usual fare. The vampires in Touch of Evil are victims of a parasite and ruled by a hive mind; the werewolves are matriarchal and not tied to the lunar cycle.

Kate’s “Not Prey” status, which is a sort of vampire diplomatic immunity, may be the most interesting plot device in Touch of Evil. Being Not Prey affords Kate certain privileges, but all of them are lost if she exhibits any “prey” behaviors. This means that she can’t do what most of us would do in her shoes: run like hell. Watching Kate attempt to evade her... Read More

Tales of the Sazi — (2004-2010) Publisher: Welcome to a new reality. Shapeshifters live among us. The Sazi are wolves and bears, snakes, raptors and cats. With each full moon, their bodies sprout fur, or scales or even feathers. They are all races, all countries, all cultures, but are forced to hide from the human population — hide in plain sight. If anyone had proof of their existence, they would be captured for testing, or slaughtered en masse. Tony, a hitman for the Mafia, was brutally attacked during a hit gone wrong. He woke up furry, and now, with every full moon, he changes into a wolf. Months later, Tony has a bad feeling that the wolf-senses are encroaching on his human life. This is confirmed when he meets a new client, Sue, and feels an immediate attraction to her. But there’s a bigger problem — she wants to hire him to kill her. As he’s drawn further into her life and her problems, the wolf inside of him clamors to be let out — and he realizes he’s not the only one around whose life is ruled by the moon… But Tony and Sue’s enemies aren’t only those in the mob and aren’t just furry. Sue’s family has their own agenda, and Tony is definitely in the way. Come explore the complex world of Tony Giodone. Meet Mafia Boss Carmine Leone, and his lovely wife, Linda. Play poker with Joey the Snake, and run from a rival hit man, as well as the homicide detective who is obsessed with arresting Tony. Engulf your senses in a supernatural world where emotions are visible in the air like faded watercolors, and the scent of fear makes your stomach growl.

C.T. Adams talks about the cover of The Exile

Thanks to Tor, we've got a copy of C.T. Adams' The Exile (Book one in her new FAE series) to give away to a reader with a U.S. or Canadian address. Just submit the form below if you'd like to enter the drawing.

I haven't read The Exile yet, but the striking cover keeps beckoning me and I will surely give in soon. I asked C.T. Adams what she thought about the cover and whether an artist's rendering of her characters might influence how the author might view and/or write the character in future volumes of a series. Here's what she said:
The cover for The Exile is gorgeous. I think it really pops and will fly off the shelves.

Unlike a lot of authors, I have a clause in my contract that allows me to have cover consultation. Ultimately the publisher has the final say – they have to worry about sales after all. But Tor and my edito... Read More
