Greg Van Eekhout

Greg Van Eekhout

Greg Van Eekhout is known here on the site mostly for his DANIEL BLACKLAND series, beginning with California Bones (here are our reviews), but he also writes middle-grade fantasy/science fiction, and adult urban fantasy. Greg lives in Southern California. He’s a very busy guy, but in between all his tasks and attending the Phoenix ComiCon he set aside some time for a few quick questions from us.  Thanks, Greg!

One random commenter in the USA will win a copy of California Bones.

Marion Deeds: You have been working on a comic set in the California Bones universe. Please tell us everything you think is cool about it.

Greg Van Ekkhout: This is true! Artist Ryan Cody and I collaborated on a nine-page short-story prequel to California Bones. It features three of the trilogy’s main characters – Daniel, Moth, and Cassandra – pulling one of their typical heists. Typical in the sense that everything goes to pot. Ryan’s art is just pitch-perfect.

Hopefully by the time people are reading this interview it’ll be available on Comixology. I’m also putting up a limited number of print copies on an Etsy shop. People can check my website (www.writingandsnacks.com) for links. And Ryan and I are pitching it to a few comics publishers because we’d love to do this as a graphic novel or regular title.

We’d love to see it as a regular title, since the California Bones world is so fascinating.  I suspect that isn’t your only project right now. What else are you working on?

California Bones, the comic book

I just finished a new middle-grade novel, about dogs in space, so hopefully that’ll be hitting editors’ desks before too long.

What are you reading now that you enjoy? If you don’t have time to read, is there an author you would like to recommend to us?
My reading time has been pretty scarce, and at the top of the stack are a few soon-to-be published novels I’ve been asked to consider blurbing. You know what I’m really enjoying right now? Archie comics.

Okay… I did not see that coming.

Mark Waid is writing it, and it’s fun and feels really fresh.

I’ve read good things about it from others, too. We’ll be watching for site for news on the comic, and dogs in space. Thanks for your time!
