For FanLit’s fifth birthday, we thought a makeover would be nice.
We’re working with some new themes, so things may be a little messy around here for a bit until it’s straightened out.
Feedback would be really nice! Please comment to let us know if you like it so far.

The Simulacra: Chaotic and zany
If this page means that the new side will have black-on-white text, hooray! I’m 63, and I’ve always found it difficult to read the text-on-dark-background stuff on the old site.
Looks fabulous!
I’m liking the new look so far. Love the links to the weekly topics across the top of the home page and I really like the black on white text. It’s much easier to read.
Needs a flaming torch!
I agree, Rich!

And a few sledgehammers…
i like the new layout.
the one thing i do not like is the fact that you only see the reviews for each author. this site is a great data source for seeing all author books and series which now you can’t see.
but the rest is great
Thanks for the feedback, and we’re glad to know you like that feature because we’ve spent literally thousands of hours over 5 years compiling the information. All of it is now on static html pages editable only by me, so we’re in the process of moving it over to the content management system so that it is accessible and editable by our whole team. It will take a long time, but we’ll get it done.
Meanwhile, those old pages are still accessible in The Dungeon.
Just a feedback note on display for WWWednesday column: the little Facebook etc. tool bar covers up some of the text (from header to Dealing with Dragons image). I have been unable to close or move it. The Dealing with Dragons image in turn covers first three lines/eight or so letters of the grey box quote. (XP & latest Firefox)
Hello again!
I was wondering. Over the time I’ve been coming here, I’ve pretty much read all the authors’ pages in search of new books/writers to read. (Sad, I know)
Since the update, I’ve noticed the number has crept up over 1,200. Which means there are about 20 new ones. Is there a place where the new ones are listed? Or can they be (temporarily) highlighted in the listings?
Just so, you know, I don’t have to start over from the beginning… ;)
Tizz
PS Thanks for sorting out the screen issue. It’s not that my screen is particularly small, just that I stayed with the 3×4 format (because of the way I work) rather than moving to 6×9.
Hi Tizz,
Actually, the number of authors went DOWN. If you go to the Dungeon (the archives), you’ll see that we were up to 1319. That’s because we used to list authors we hadn’t yet reviewed and now we only have those we’ve actually read and reviewed listed. When new ones pop up, they are the new authors we’ve just reviewed, so they should be noticeable on the front page. Eventually, after everything else is organized as we bring stuff out of the archives and put it into this blog format (will take a long time), we’ll probably add back the authors who we want to acknowledge and provide information about but who we haven’t actually reviewed. Our goal, of course, is to review all of them eventually.
It’s nice to know that people read all those pages — a lot of work went into it! :)
Hi, Kat,
Thanks for the clarification — seems all I remembered was that it went from somewhere in the 90s when I started reading to somewhere in the tens — or maybe it’s just the mind going!
Actually, it’s worse that just reading the pages; I’ve been comparing the author list with my own substantial catalogue (representing books in boxes from times past, some sadly unread!)
I did notice that some authors had no reviewed books, and also that some authors have very incomplete book lists. And gaps where an author I’ve read and found quite good is missing. (But it’s a short-lived genre, many books age badly, and a 20 year old book is possibly unreadable now!) Some, of course, are resurfacing via audio books, as you know probably better than I do!
Take care. Love the site. Visit every day at least once.
We are missing a lot, we know. There’s just so much to keep up with and it’s a hobby. We try to fill in as we go, but so much new stuff comes out that it’s impossible to keep up with it all. Too many books to read, too little time! :)
Thanks for the compliments, Tizz!
